Abuses in the Catholic Church take many forms: hearsay treated as a verdict, a punitive drift used as an alibi, and the desire to strike at enemies running beneath the surface. The result is a stifling climate, which wears people down even before any procedures begin and turns faith into something one must defend oneself from, rather than a home in which to be healed.
